Some Marvel heroes embrace the darkness, preferring to lurk in the shadows over fighting in the sky. The upcoming Crypt of Shadows (by Karen Darboe, Travis Lanham, Jordan White, Leinil Francis Yu and Matt Milla) will bring together some of Marvel’s greatest monster hunters, including Moon Knight and Bloodline, the daughter of Blade. If this new version is anything like the first Crypt of Shadows from the 1970s, fans of horror have a lot to look forward to.
Bloodline, also known as Brielle, was introduced as the daughter of Blade/Eric Brooks in Avengers/X-Men Vol. 1. #1 (by Kieron Gilden, Dustin Weaver and Marte Gracia), When she discovered that one of the tournament participants was a vampire, she defended her friend. Her mother, Safron Caulder deVille (one of Blade’s ex-lovers), is also mentioned in the story. Blade shared with Safron his identities as both vampire hunter, and half-vampire. Not much else is known about Brielle, but Marvel will release a new comic book, Bloodline: Daughter of Blade, in the fall of this year that should reveal more details.

The line-up of monster hunters also includes Elsa Bloodstone, who first made an appearance in Bloodstone by Dan Abnette, Andy Lanning and Michael Lopez. Like Brielle, Elsa comes from a line of monster hunters and supernaturalists. Ulysses was her father and an experienced monster hunter. He was a prehistoric hunter/gatherer who found a magic stone known as the Bloodgem, and had absorbed its power. Elsa inherited most of the superhuman powers her father had, including speed, strength, healing and speed. Her immunity to vampire bites is also a plus.
Also joining the pack is Laura Kinney/Wolverine, a clone of the original Wolverine. Laura Kinney/Wolverine is not only his clone but also his biological child. After attempting to clone Logan’s DNA, a geneticist mixed it with hers. Laura, also referred to as X-23, is a skilled fighter with many abilities inherited from her father.

Last but certainly not least, Crypt of Shadows brings Moon Knight to the forefront as he once again tackles creatures of the night. Marc Spector once was a mercenary at the edge of his death. Also, he suffered from dissociative identification disorder. In exchange for Khonshu, the Egyptian god Khonshu raised him to life as Moon Knight. This was Khonshu’s avatar and vigilante.
Moon Knight has fought numerous opponents who are either supernatural or super-skilled, including a werewolf, Shadow Knight and dangerous martial artists including Bushman and Bullseye. With a line-up like this one, Crypt of Shadows is sure to bring a bloody treat just in time for spooky season.
