Disney Channel’s upcoming animated series Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur will feature a stacked lineup of guest stars.
As part of San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Marvel HQ debuted a new clip from Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, which is slated to premiere on Disney Channel in 2023. Additionally, Marvel announced the all-star roster of guest stars that have joined the cartoon’s voice cast, including Alison Brie (Community, GLOW), Andy Cohen (Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen), Daveed Diggs (Broadway’s Hamilton), Maya Hawke (Stranger Things), Jennifer Hudson (Respect), Cliff “Method Man” Smith (Power Book II: Ghost), Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother, The Avengers) and Wesley Snipes (Blade).
“Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” follows 13-year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette (aka Moon Girl) and her 10-ton T-Rex, Devil Dinosaur, as they protect New York City’s Lower East Side from danger. Based on Marvel’s hit comic books, the highly-anticipated Disney Branded Television animated series is slated to premiere in 2023 on Disney Channel and Disney+.
Of course, many of these actors are no stranger Marvel properties. First and foremost, Snipes famously starred as Eric Brooks/Blade in New Line Cinema’s Blade film trilogy from 1998 to 2004. Meanwhile, Smulders has portrayed Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the 2012 film The Avengers. Legendary rapper Method Man, of Wu-Tang Clan fame, even guest starred as himself on the Netflix series Marvel’s Luke Cage.
Additionally, Brie actually directed an episode of the Disney+ anthology documentary series Marvel’s 616. Finally, while Stranger Things star Maya Hawke has not previously appeared in a Marvel project herself, her father, Ethan Hawke, recently starred as main antagonist Arthur Harrow on the MCU-set Disney+ series Moon Knight.
As for Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Marvel has also announced some of the show’s recurring stars, including Omid Abtahi (The Mandalorian), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Ghosts), Michael Cimino (Love, Victor), Indya Moore (Pose) and Craig Robinson (The Office).
Furthermore, the House of Ideas has announced a list of “additional” guest stars, including Gideon Adlon (Pacific Rim: The Black), Pamela Adlon (Better Things), Anna Akana (Youth & Consequences), Ian Alexander (The OA), May Calamawy (Moon Knight), Wilson Cruz (Star Trek: Discovery), Asia Kate Dillon (Billions), Luis Guzmán (How to Make It in America), astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison, Josh Keaton (Marvel’s Spider-Man), June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie), Paul Scheer (The League) and Tajinae Turner (Meet the Voxels).
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur Has Had a Long Path to Animation
Created by Brandon Montclare, Amy Reeder and Natacha Bustos, Lunella Lafayette/Moon Girl first appeared in 2015’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1. Meanwhile, Devil Dinosaur himself was originally created by Jack Kirby, first appearing in 1978’s Devil Dinosaur #1. A Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur animated series entered development in 2018 before getting the green light at Disney Channel in 2019.
Disney Channel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is created by Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland. The animated series’ main voice cast includes Diamond White as Lunella/Moon Girl; Alfre Woodard as Mimi, Lunella’s grandmother; Libe Barer as Casey, Lunella’s best friend and manager; Sasheer Zamata as Adria, Lunella’s mom; Jermaine Fowler as James Jr., Lunella’s dad; and Gary Anthony Williams as Pops, Lunella’s grandfather. Fishburne voices The Beyonder in a recurring capacity.
