Marvel announces Zeb Wells as one of the writers on the script for The Marvels, along with director Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Megan McDonnell.

Marvel Studios has confirmed She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Marvel Comics writer Zeb Wells as one of the scribes behind The Marvels.

Wells’ involvement in the Captain Marvel sequel was confirmed via a press release from Marvel. He is known for his work as the Emmy award-winning writer and director for Robot Chicken, which includes the Emmy-nominated Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II. He has also written for several Marvel Comics titles, including Heroes For Hire, Avengers and various Spider-Man titles. He also served as a writer for Venom: Dark Origin, New Mutants, and launched the Avenging Spider-Man series with Joe Madureira in 2011. Wells also wrote the seventh episode of Disney+’s She-Hulk series, “The Retreat.”

Overall, The Marvels script will be written by four writers. Along with Wells, the writers include the film’s director Nia DaCosta, Loki writer Elissa Karasik and WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell. Karasik wrote the second episode for the first season of Disney+’s Loki, “The Variant.” McDonell, however, wrote Episode 3 of WandaVision, “Now in Color.” The episode also starred Teyonnah Parris, who will reprise her role as Monica Rambeau in The Marvels.

Captain Marvel Will Share the Big Screen in the MCU Sequel

Directed by DaCosta, The Marvels stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Parris as Monica Rambeau/Photon and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. Vellani made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Kamala Khan in Disney+’s Ms. Marvel, which has been renewed for a second season. The Season 1 finale of Ms. Marvel promised that Kamala Khan would return as the hero in the Captain Marvel sequel and featured a cameo from Larson in a post-credit scene.

Filming on The Marvels began in August 2021 and details on the plot still remain relatively unknown, though DaCosta revealed that the story will explore the more human side of Carol Danvers, saying she wanted to approach “these characters as human beings and not necessarily as superheroes.” In the same interview, DaCosta explained how she intended to give both Monica and Kamala enough space to breathe in a film focused on Captain Marvel.

“It’s interesting, and something we thought about and worked through a lot, which was how do we get each of these really big, exciting heroes space in a two-hour film?” the director said. “Captain Marvel has a history from the first film, Kamala will have her Ms. Marvel show, and Monica Rambeau, we’ve only seen her a little bit in WandaVision.” She continued, “How do we honor the part of the story they’re at in terms of the canon, while also within our story making them equal?”

The Marvels will hit theaters on July 28, 2023.
