The new DLC for Marvel’s Avengers includes hidden dialogue between the Winter Soldier and Spider-Man about how to play Dungeons & Dragons.
Marvel’s Avengers includes a side conversation where Spider-Man teaches new DLC character Bucky Barnes all about the basics of playing Dungeons & Dragons.
The game’s newest playable character, the Winter Soldier, has a handful of interactions with Spidey (who himself was added to the game last year). Most of these conversations are about Captain America, but one moment has Spider-Man bringing Bucky up to speed about the modern day. Since Spider-Man is a famously geeky superhero, this includes explaining the invention of tabletop role-playing games, although Bucky seems stuck on how many dice are required: “Okay wait, wait, so you use more than one die, and they’re all different shapes?” The conversation then moves into the finer points of four-sided dice, their weird pyramid shape, and why Spider-Man knows from experience that you should never step on them by accident.
The Winter Soldier was officially added to Marvel’s Avengers on Nov. 29, making him the most recent DLC character since Jane Foster, the Mighty Thor, back in June. His backstory in the game remains similar to his origin story in the comics: Captain America’s former sidekick Bucky is brainwashed by the Soviets into a cold assassin. Bucky eventually breaks free shortly after the A-Day incident in the game’s prologue. Mourning the apparent death of Captain America, Bucky is sent by Maria Hill to help rescue all the Inhumans that AIM has captured, although main villain Monica Rappaccini exploits his mind control protocols to reactivate him again.
Bucky, who has both his Winter Soldier and old-school sidekick skins, plays mostly as a long-range combatant who prefers quick bursts of gunfire from his rifle. While he lacks a shield like Captain America, his sturdy metal arm can be used to block attacks in the same way. And because of his similar backstory and close relationship with Black Widow in this game, he has similar stealth options like cloaking technology.
Bucky has been featured prominently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since his introduction in Captain America: The First Avenger. After re-debuting as the Winter Soldier in Captain America’s second film, he’s turned into the MCU’s most recurring antihero. As of now, he’s only interacted with the MCU’s Spider-Man briefly, when they fought during Captain America: Civil War’s gigantic airfield battle. Bucky most recently appeared in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and his arm made a minor, surprise appearance in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
Marvel’s Avengers is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
