A brief conversation between Captain Marvel and Iron Man in Firaxis Games’ Midnight Suns references their conflict in the Civil War II comic books.
An interaction between Iron Man and Captain Marvel in Firaxis Games’ Marvel’s Midnight Suns hid a clever reference to the root of their conflict in Civil War II.
Players in Marvel’s Midnight Suns discovered a conversation option with Nico Minoru, wherein the young sorceress described a heated argument between Captain Marvel and Iron Man. “Did you hear about Carol and Tony’s argument?” she asked the player. “They were talking about the power to see the future. Carol said if she had it, she’d lock up anyone before they could commit a crime. Tony disagreed, colorfully.”
Players were given the choice between two responses. The first choice agreed with Captain Marvel’s methods, with the Hunter stating that they would do whatever was necessary to prevent a terrible tragedy if they knew when and where it would occur. Choosing this option would earn the player three friendship experience points with Captain Marvel and grant 10 points to their resilience. In contrast, the second option sided with Iron Man’s cautious approach to foresight, wherein the Hunter believed punishing others for what they might do in the future was an inherently immoral act. Choosing this option granted three friendship experience points with Iron Man, in addition to 10 bonus points to the player’s willpower.
The Second Civil War
The dialogue was likely a reference to Ulysses Cain, a human who was exposed to a Terrigen Cloud and subsequently manifested the power to see the future in Civil War II #1. Though Ulysses wanted to help the Avengers — even warning them of the Celestial Destructor’s imminent attack on Earth — his power eventually caused the superheroes to fracture into two groups. One led by Captain Marvel, who believed they should use Ulysses’ gift to preemptively prevent catastrophes even at the cost of personal liberties, and one led by Iron Man, who believed they couldn’t justify their actions with a power they did not understand.
Steam Troubleshooting
PC players reported severe performance issues with the Steam version of Marvel’s Midnight Suns, leading to many users slamming the title with negative reviews. Players alleged Marvel’s Midnight Suns was poorly optimized for PC, which caused frequent stuttering frame rates during battles and long loading screens. Some fans additionally speculated that the title’s technical issues stemmed from its use of the anti-tamper software Denuvo, a DRM tool notorious for hindering the performance of PC applications.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns is available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Versions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch are scheduled for release sometime in 2023.
