The following contains major spoilers for Thor #29, available now from Marvel Comics.
Of all the heroes in the Marvel Universe, few if any have had quite as complicated a family life as Thor. Apart from ascending to the rank of All-Father while his own is sealed away inside Mjolnir, Thor has had to grapple with what seems like one startling revelation after another regarding his lineage. Now, the latest threat to strike out at Thor’s family has come to claim the God of Thunder’s baby sister as their own. Worse still he is utterly unable to handle the situation alone, meaning there has never been a better time to bring back Marvel’s very own Babysitters Club.
Thor #29 (by Torunn Grønbekk, Nic Klein, Matt Wilson, and VC’s Joe Sabino) finds Thor hard at work trying to chart the course of the recently returned Corvus Glaive. Somehow, Corvus has managed to get his hands on Thor’s baby sister Laussa before escaping to the uncharted depths of Niffleheim. Although Thor is aware that Corvus is following in Thanos’ footsteps searching for the Black Infinity Stone, he has no idea how he is supposed to track the villain down. Of course, like most other Asgardians, Laussa isn’t exactly in need of saving, and her Babysitters Club is proof of it.
Supposedly formed by Balder the Brave back in 2019’s War of the Realms: Journey Into Mystery #1 (by Clint McElroy, Griffin McElroy, Justin McElroy, Travis McElroy, and André Lima Araújo), the Babysitters Club was the nickname given to a group of heroes consisting of Wonder Man, Miles Morales, Hawkeye, Thori, and Death Locket. At the time, Laussa was the target of her half-sister Sindr, who had hoped to take advantage of Laussa’s innate power for herself. In fact, it was Laussa’s abilities that brought the heroes together, just as it was her influence that determined the course of their adventure.
While the various members of the Babysitters Club were undoubtedly powerful in their own right, the unspoken control that Laussa exerted over them made it evident that she was far stronger than any of them. Despite her young age and diminutive size, the fact that Laussa has continuously been at the center of someone else’s plot further speaks to her importance in the Marvel Universe. This makes it all the more surprising that Thor hasn’t called upon the Babysitters Club for help already.
This isn’t to say that the individual members of the Babysitters Club don’t have their own important duties to carry out, nor that Asgard is incapable of offering Laussa any sort of protection. What makes this so shocking, however, is that Asgard very clearly cannot offer the level of protection Laussa needs after slipping from one villain’s clutches to another’s. Even if the likes of Miles Morales cannot make watching Laussa their permanent gig, there are others who absolutely could, and likely should have from the beginning.
There is no doubt that Laussa will ultimately return from Corvus’ plot largely unscathed, especially when her kidnapper himself is acutely aware of the power the young Asgardian wields. What is in question, on the other hand, is just what it will take to make that happen. Considering how far out of his element he is, Thor obviously won’t be saving the day alone. When it comes to his divine and demonic kid sister, there really isn’t any better help he could ask for than that of the heroes who spent so long making her their entire world.
