The Blasphemy Cartel, a group Clea and Doctor Strange have been facing, brings the Sentry back as an undead being possessed by millions of souls.
The following contains spoilers for Strange #9, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
In the final issue of Strange, the Sentry is raised from the grave as a powerful undead monster that Earth’s mystical heroes, Clea and Stephen Strange, must defeat.
The prior Strange #9 left off with the cliffhanger that the Blasphemy Cartel, an organization asserting its dominance over mystical communities, resurrected the Sentry as their latest Revenant, labeling him “Revenant Prime.” A Revenant is an undead superhuman possessed by thousands of souls that make the raised individual even stronger, but for the Sentry, his body is currently housing over one million ghosts. Written by Jed MacKay and illustrated by Marcelo Ferreira, a preview of the upcoming Strange #10 shows that the souls mixed with Sentry’s pre-existing power set is a dangerous combination that the Stranges, two Sorcerer Supremes, are struggling to combat.

Created by writer Paul Jenkins and artist Jae Lee in Sentry #1 (2000), the Sentry possesses invulnerability and other superpowers on par with DC Comics’ Superman. He was killed by the symbiote god Knull during Marvel’s King in Black event, allowing for his body to be used by the Blasphemy Cartel for their means of serving the Trinity of Ashes — enemies of Doctor Strange. Though she wields the combined power of being both Earth and the Dark Dimension’s Sorcerer Supreme, Clea says in the preview that she is “frightened” of the undead Sentry, labeling him now a “god of demons” while he remains impervious to the Stranges’ attacks.
How Can Marvel’s Sentry Be Defeated as a Revenant?
Previously, other Revenants — Thunderstrike, Shadow Knight and Goliath — were defeated by Stephen using Death’s scythe to destroy the undead creatures. Another method that has been used, one created by Clea, is a home-brew spell that can exorcise all souls possessing the dead superhuman. In the preview, while Clea is not given enough time to attempt the spell on Sentry, his invulnerability causes Stephen’s scythe to bounce right off, indicating that it will take more to bring him down.
