The Amazing Spider-Man reveals that the newest villain for Peter Parker to face, Hallows’ Eve, is someone he is already familiar with.
Written by Zeb Wells and illustrated by various artists, the anthology issue The Amazing Spider-Man #14 explains how the alliance between Chasm/Ben Reilly and the Goblin Queen/Madelyne Pryor was forged. The two clones, wanting to get revenge on the heroes they were copied from, are about to lead an assault on New York in Marvel’s Dark Web event. In the story “Fall” illustrated by Terry Dodson, Ben’s girlfriend, Janine Godbe, expresses how helpless she feels to Madelyne, who — with Janine’s permission — turns her into Hallows’ Eve.
Janine Godbe was created by writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Jon Romita Jr. in 1995, first appearing in Spider-Man: The Lost Years #1. Her original name was Elizabeth Tyne, but she changed her identity after killing her abusive father and going on the run, meeting Ben and entering into a relationship with the hero. She later served time in prison, but when Ben began working for the Beyond Corporation as their sponsored Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man‘s “Beyond” storyline, he had Beyond free her, though the company made it seem as though she had broken out to the public.
Ben Reilly and Janine’s Villainous Turn in The Amazing Spider-Man, Explained
The Beyond Corporation proved to be more of an evil business as opposed to an altruistic one, and messed with Ben’s mind, erasing the memories he had from Peter Parker. Beyond made Peter out to be Ben’s enemy, being that he wouldn’t use the company’s technology to restore the memories that Ben had lost, causing the two to fight. Their battle ended with Ben falling into a psychoactive substance destroying Beyond’s headquarters, but Janine found him later reborn as the villain Chasm, and has since helped him with his goal to get revenge on Peter.
The Amazing Spider-Man #14 serves as a prelude to Dark Web, a crossover event featuring Spider-Man, the X-Men, Venom, Ms.Marvel and others. Marvel announced at New York Comic Con 2022 that Hallows’ Eve will be getting a miniseries written by Erica Schultz and drawn by Michael Dowling. The Hallows’ Eve title is set to take place after the events of Dark Web and Ben’s mission to steal Peter’s soul with Madelyne’s help.
Along with Wells and Terry Dodson, The Amazing Spider-Man #14 features art by Dowling, Kyle Hotz and Ryan Stegman, inks by Rachel Dodson, Tim Townsend and JP Mayer, colors by Richard Isanove, Dan Brown and Matt Hollingsworth, and letters by VC’s Joe Caramagna. Main cover art for the issue is by Romita Jr., Scott Hanna and Marcio Menyz, with variant cover artwork contributed to by Hotz, Brown, Alex Maleev, Ed McGuinness, Menyz and John Staub. The issue is now on sale from Marvel Comics.
