Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ teases a few details on Venom and Eddie Brock’s storylines in the aftermath of their service to the demonic Lilith.
The team behind Marvel’s Midnight Suns offered some more details on Venom and Eddie Brock’s shift from Lilith’s symbiote servant to a playable character.
The game’s associate producer, Michael Kotey, was joined by Creative Director Jake Solomon and Lead Designer Joe Weinhoffer for a nearly two-hour YouTube livestream days before the game’s release. They mentioned DLC characters like Eddie Brock/Venom come with three unique story missions that run parallel to the main narrative. Weinhoffer stated, “We have Fallen Venom in the game, and his story kind of ends part way through the story and then the DLC kind of picks up where that leaves off and you really get to hang out with Eddie and feel and learn about how does he feel about everything that happened with Lilith.”
New details were dropped throughout, but the main star of the stream was the game’s 13th hero, the Hulk. Solomon and Weinhoffer explained that the Hulk’s core ability is Hulk’s Rage which lets him grow stronger as he takes damage. While this means he can deliver some destructive moves in the thick of the fight, the pair warn that playing the not-so-jolly green giant is a balancing act. As the last attainable hero in the game’s story, he is a hero option for the least number of core missions but is available from the start if players create a New Game+.
The unique mix of tactical positioning and randomized cards gives players a lot to consider when selecting their team. Each Midnight Suns hero has a role to play, and how players balance these superheroes’ strengths and weaknesses will determine their overall success. Mobility, support, damage and defensive options are readily available, and the fully customizable player stand-in, The Hunter, can be used to shore up the weak points of a team or accentuate its strongest abilities.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns has critics pleasantly surprised both with the game’s combat and character dialogue back in the Midnight Suns’ headquarters, the Abbey. For the game’s writing, Jordan Middler of VGX stated, “Firaxis, a studio famed for being the master of ‘one more turn’ gameplay, has managed to include dialogue engaging enough that we found ourselves searching out ‘one more dialogue tree’ before heading back out to battle.”
Marvel’s Midnight Suns is out now for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
