Marvel’s Avengers new character skins for The Winter Soldier, aka Bucky Barnes, feature iconic costumes from throughout the hero’s lengthy history.
Marvel’s Avengers is honoring Captain America’s famous sidekick by adding skins featuring Bucky Barnes’ most iconic threads.
As detailed on the Marvel’s Avengers Dev Blog, The Winter Soldier will join the game’s character roster on Nov. 29 with 10 different skins to choose from. The designs for most of these skins come from Captain America (2004-2011), written by Ed Brubaker with artwork by Steve Epting. This series brought Bucky back into action after a long period during which he was presumed dead. At least one skin in the collection is based on Bucky’s look in the 2014 Original Sin Crossover Event, written by Jason Aaron with artwork by Mike Deodato.
Bucky Barnes’ Many Unique Looks as The Winter Soldier
While Square Enix wanted to pay tribute to Bucky’s comic history, “Outfit 1” is “unique to the world of Marvel’s Avengers.” This version “captures a cutting-edge mercenary feel” by featuring the character with a bulletproof vest, modern-looking military fatigues and a segmented cyborg arm. Players also have the option to add a domino mask, which is unlocked by interacting with Bucky’s Hero Card. “Outfit 2” features the version of Bucky inspired by his appearance in Captain America #6, where he is still under outside control. This skin features a tactical uniform, his iconic arm cable and a carbon composite faceplate with red-tinted lenses.
“Outfit 3” is inspired by Bucky’s “White Wolf” persona, a mantle the hero took after immersing himself in Wakandan Culture. This look features a Vibranium-laced vest and a metal arm gifted to him by King T’Challa and Shuri. Inspired by the period where Bucky breaks from AIM’s control, “Outfit 4” features the hero in an inconspicuous “everyman” outfit consisting of a brown leather jacket, black shades and denim pants. “Outfit 5” gives him a simple “40s-influenced” look featuring a white cotton tee, a close-cropped haircut and a more natural-looking metal arm. Inspired by Captain America #616, where Bucky is imprisoned within a Siberian gulag, “Outfit 6” features him in a black-stripped, prison-issued uniform.
“Outfit 7” pays tribute to the “true wartime” Bucky that frequently undertook ethically questionable missions, showing the character dressed in a uniform featuring his classic-color scheme, while “Outfit 8” honors the period before Bucky teams up with Captain America by showcasing the hero in a WWII-themed outfit. “Outfit 9” is based on the deep-space suit featured in the aforementioned Original Sin event. In contrast to the WWII suit, this metallic one “seeks to capture a sci-fi retro feel but with modern details.” Inspired by Captain America #11, where Bucky has amnesia and is subjected to a series of cruel experiments designed to turn him into the perfect assassin, “Outfit 10” features a tactical vest, a gen-one brainwashing helmet and a prototype cyborg arm.
The Winter Soldier will be available in Marvel’s Avengers starting Nov. 29. The game is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
