The Square Enix game Marvel’s Avengers releases a new half-man half-bird skin for Hawkeye, based on an alternate Clint Barton from Secret Avengers.
Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers releases a new Hawkeye skin featuring an undead “Werehawk” version of Clint Barton.
The new Hawkeye outfit is based on a variant from the “Avengers of the Undead” in Secret Avengers #33 by Rick Remender and Andy Kuhn. While Barton is wearing his typical black and purple getup with his bow and quiver, he’s now covered in purple feathers and a detailed hawk head replaces his human head. Images of the new Marvel’s Avengers skin was leaked earlier in December.
Secret Avengers #33 was released in 2012 and introduced Earth-666, a gothic reality where everyone is either dead or undead. This supernatural, evil group of Avengers have all been transformed into monsters in some way, with Thor becoming a mummy, Wolverine becoming a vampire, and Punisher becoming the reanimated “Frankencastle.” While that universe’s Captain America became a normal werewolf, Hawkeye somehow became an undead Werehawk instead, which appears to follow the same rules as werewolves. The Avengers of the Undead were led by a ghostly Brother Voodoo, and they battled the Earth-616 Hawkeye and Captain Britain when they infiltrated Earth-666.
Clint Barton was added to Marvel’s Avengers in early 2021, and was the game’s second DLC character after the other Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, was added a few months earlier. Like the other playable characters in the game, Hawkeye has several alternate outfits based on his appearances in the comics and Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Prior to Werehawk, the most recent Hawkeye skin added to the game was the character’s outfit from the MCU’s The Avengers in 2012.
While some leaks have suggested that several more characters might be coming to the game, including Captain Marvel and Shuri, other leaks from the same sources claim the game’s developer Crystal Dynamics is potentially ending support for the game in 2024. None of this has been confirmed by Crystal Dynamics or Square Enix. Besides several skins and missions, this year saw two new characters added to the game, Mighty Thor/Jane Foster and the Winter Soldier.
Marvel’s Avengers is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
