A report from a trusted leaker claims Crystal Dynamics intends to halt all development of additional content for Marvel’s Avengers by 2024.
Reports indicated video game developer Crystal Dynamics will stop the development of new content for Marvel’s Avengers by 2024.
According to eXputer, trusted leaker Miller Ross claimed Crystal Dynamics was preparing to discontinue development on projects pertaining to Marvel’s Avengers. “Studio leadership at Crystal Dynamics has apparently long maintained 3 to 5 years as their target for Marvel’s Avengers‘ lifespan post-launch, and it would seem they are on track to meet that goal, however barely,” Ross wrote. “As of now, I am told there are no plans for content in 2024.”
Ross additionally stated that he remained uncertain regarding the development status for new characters in 2023, with the leaker noting the poor player reception towards Marvel’s Avengers‘ previous content updates. Ross specifically mentioned the disappointing release of Mighty Thor and the Winter Soldier, which were characters who borrowed heavily from the movesets of other playable heroes. The leaker also observed how Marvel’s Avengers‘ reputation had been soured after the title was caught up in several controversies, especially by the most recent incident regarding the discovery of lead designer Brian Waggoner’s inflammatory tweets from 2010 to 2017.
A Grim Future
Ross’ report supported his previous suspicions that Crystal Dynamics would cease development for Marvel’s Avengers sooner rather than later. When asked if an influx of new players could save the game, Ross believed it was unlikely. “I’ve got to tell you, I’m not sure we ever will [see an influx of new players],” the leaker said. “There’s only so much that I can say. I’ve had conversations in the last few weeks that paint a rather grim picture of the future. I was on record a few months ago saying I don’t think we’re going to make it to the 4.0 update series. I really don’t see it. I mean, that’s over a year away. We still have the whole 3.0 update series to get through.”
She-Hulk Canceled
Ross additionally stated that Crystal Dynamics canceled its plans to add She-Hulk to Marvel’s Avengers. Developers reportedly intended to implement She-Hulk in 2021, but shortages in the studio’s budget and manpower led to issues with production. Ross claimed Crystal Dynamics eventually decided to halt She-Hulk’s development until parent company Embracer Group allocated more resources to the project, a request Embracer ultimately refused.
Marvel’s Avengers is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
