Marvel Snap announces its first season for 2023 with The Savage Lands, featuring the new character Zabu along with new variants and locations.
Marvel Snap has announced its new season with brand new characters, variants and locations.
Announced via the official Marvel website, the first season of 2023 will take players to The Savage Lands, boasting untamed beasts, wild variants and dangerous locations. Promising the most content-packed season yet, the new season introduces the character Zabu, four new characters, three unique Alex Horley variants, five new locations, card backs and more.
The new character card Zabu — sabertooth tiger and companion to Ka-Zar — has a power value of two and an energy cost of three and features an ongoing ability that makes 4-cost cards cost two less. The Savage Land season also introduces new character cards, including Sauran, Shanna the She-Devil, Dazzler and Shadow King. The cards will be released periodically throughout January.
Marvel Snap boasts some new locations to shake up matches. Fitting the theme of The Savage Lands are areas like Rickety Bridge, Altar of Death, Eternity Range, Plunder Castle and Collapsed Mine. These areas also have some unique effects — Rickety Bridge will force players to destroy any cards placed there if there is more than one card here, while Altar of Death allows players to sacrifice a card for +2 energy. Toward the end of the Season, the game will also introduce its PvP-style Battle Mode.
The Savage Lands was first introduced in Marvel Comics as “The Land Where Time Stands Still,” in the 1941 Marvel Mystery Comics (vol.1) #22 by writer and artist Carl Burgos. Similar to the land of Wakanda, it is a hidden prehistoric land located in a fictionalized Antarctica, created by the alien Nuwali at the behest of the Beyonders, who wanted to watch the process of evolution under relatively controlled conditions. It has appeared in several story arcs for Uncanny X-Men, several other related comics and one Marvel-published Transformers comic series.
Marvel Snap was launched on Oct 18, 2022, for iOS, Android, and PC. It received overwhelmingly positive reviews, currently sitting at 85 on Metacritic, with critics praising the game’s mechanics but criticizing its potential for predatory microtransactions. It has steadily grown in popularity, following several season updates, and has been downloaded around 5.3 million times. It won Best Mobile Game at the 2022 Video Game Awards and has cleared over $10 million in revenue in its first month of release.
