Steve Rogers’ son returns to the Marvel Universe to team up with Cap in the upcoming issue of the ongoing series Captain America: Symbol of Truth.
The following contains major spoilers for Captain America: Symbol of Truth #7, on sale from Nov. 30 2022 from Marvel Comics.
The fate of Captain America’s son will be revealed in the latest issue of Marvel’s ongoing series Captain America: Symbol of Truth.
Written by Tochi Onyebuchi and illustrated by Ig Guara, Captain America: Symbol of Truth #7 will see the return of Ian Rogers, the adopted son of Steve Rogers — better known as Marvel’s original Captain America. The mantle is currently held by Sam Wilson, who faced, and ultimately failed to stop, a devastating attack on the United Nations in Symbol of Truth #6. The upcoming issue of the series will see Sam recruit Ian Rogers aka Nomad to aid in his search for justice.
The events of the previous issue ignited a civil war in Mohannda (a neighbor of Wakanda), leaving its leader dead and the new Falcon gravely wounded. Now Sam is on the trail of those responsible: classic Black Panther antagonist the White Wolf and his old nemesis Crossbones. With Captain America in dire need of backup, Sam is directed by his ally Senator Mansfeld to Norway, where he encounters Ian Rogers finishing off a HYDRA cell in a typically trigger-happy fashion.
Ian, thought by Sam to be dead after the events of 2015’s All-New Captain America #6, is the biological creation of classic Cap antagonist and mad scientist, Arnim Zola. Originally named Leopold, he was rescued as an infant by Steve Rogers and given a new name and training as a hero. Ian grew up in the unforgiving Dimension Z and suffered brainwashing at the hands of Zola before his first apparent death. He later regained control over his mind and became the defender of Dimension Z before journeying to Earth. A childhood defined by conflict shaped the character into a fighter lacking the mercy that defines Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson.
The reunion raises questions about the nature of the relationship between Sam and his best friend’s son. Their last encounter wasn’t always friendly, with Ian questioning Sam’s suitability for the Captain America identity, and Sam ill at ease with Ian’s more violent tendencies.
Captain America: Symbol of Truth #7 is written by Onyebuchi, illustrated by Guara, colored by Jesus Aburtov, and lettered by VC’s Joe Caramagna. The main cover art for the issue is by Aburtov and R.B. Silva, with variant cover artwork by Ken Lashley and Juan Fernandez. The issue will be on sale from Nov. 30, 2022 from Marvel Comics.
