Solicitation information for Marvel Comics’ Red Goblin #2, which releases March 2023, reveals the publisher is about to crown a brand-new Goblin King.
Marvel is going to crown a brand-new Goblin King in 2023 in the upcoming Red Goblin series.
Revealed in Marvel’s solicitations for March 2023, Red Goblin #2 will see a new villain take on the mantle of Goblin King. Written by Alex Paknadel with art by Jan Bazaldua, the synopsis for Red Goblin #2 reads, “WHO IS THE GOBLIN KING?! A new GOBLIN KING reigns under the streets of New York – but who, or what, is this terrifying new leader of a resurgent GOBLIN NATION?! And why has he kidnapped Norman Osborn? And why has he siphoned off GALLONS of Osborn’s goblin-serum-infused blood?!”
Marvel’s New York City May Have a Goblin Infestation
While the individual behind the new Goblin King mask remains to be seen, New York City is currently being attacked by another member of goblin royalty, the Goblin Queen/Madelyne Pryor, in Marvel’s Dark Web event. Madelyne has teamed up with Chasm/Ben Reilly, Hallow’s Eve/Janine Godbe and Venom/Eddie Brock to unleash a horde of demons from Limbo that Spider-Man/Peter Parker and the X-Men have had to battle. One of the mutants caught up in the fight was also formerly a Goblin, Alex Summers/Havok, as he acted as the Goblin Prince during the 1989 “Inferno” crossover storyline.
Norman Osborn, meanwhile, has recently started a new chapter of his life as he’s moved away from being the Green Goblin after his wrongdoings were wiped away by the Sin-Eater in 2020’s Amazing Spider-Man #50 (by Nick Spencer, Patrick Gleason, Edgar Delgado and Joe Caramagna). Norman has since taken up the mantle of Gold Goblin; although, he’s also found that dabbling in heroics is oftentimes easier said than done.
Norman’s grandson Normie Osborn received a brand-new Red Goblin symbiote suit in Free Comic Book Day 2022: Spider-Man/Venom #1. Prior to that, Norman forcefully bonded Normie to the Carnage symbiote in 2018’s The Amazing Spider-Man #799 (by Dan Slott, Wade Von Grawbadger, Marte Gracia, Stuart Immonen and Caramagna) and turned him into “Goblin Childe.”, though the symbiote was later removed from him. Normie hasn’t been seen since Free Comic Book Day 2022: Spider-Man/Venom #1, but the first issue of Red Goblin, which releases Feb. 8, 2023, promises to follow the character as he begins to map out a legacy for himself.
Red Goblin #2 features cover art by InHyuk Lee and variant cover art by Ryan Stegman. The issue releases March 15, 2023, from Marvel Comics.
