Marvel’s first Scarlet Witch/Doctor Strange mashup hero has just been introduced, playing a role in Jessica Jones’ war against her own Variants.
The following contains major spoilers from The Variants #5, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Marvel is introducing its very first Scarlet Witch/Doctor Strange mashup thanks to another classic hero’s war against herself.
The Variants #5 by writer Gail Simone and artist Phil Noto finds the Jessica Jones fans know best fighting alongside and against various versions of herself from across the Multiverse. After multiple run-ins, Jessica has finally managed to figure out exactly which of the eponymous Variants are on her side and which are not. She also makes a powerful new Multiversal ally, unlike those she has quickly grown used to, in the form of Doctor Wanda Strange.
After defeating the twisted version of herself that is still operating under the mantle of Jewel, the primary Jessica and her allies end up at a loss as to what they should do with their villainous alter. This is where Doctor Wanda Strange comes into the picture, using her supernatural abilities to more permanently subdue Jewel without putting anyone at risk of falling victim to the villain’s life-draining powers.
Jessica Jones and the Variants
The Variants has seen Jessica’s life come unraveled on multiple levels. Initially, Jessica was plagued by the threat of Killgrave, aka the Purple Man, whose influence over her and his other past victims saw an unexpected resurgence. This was immediately followed by the abrupt introductions of Jessica’s Variants, who have ranged from the near-identical to mashups of her and other classic characters such as Captain America.
Jessica Jones first appeared in 2001’s Alias #1 by creators Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos. In the years since she has gone on to marry fellow fan-favorite Luke Cage, with whom she has a daughter who is herself a future hero, Danielle. Jessica also became a breakout Marvel Television star thanks to Jessica Jones, which premiered on Netflix in 2015 and starred Krysten Ritter. Ritter reprised the role across three seasons, as well as in 2017’s The Defenders, which acted as a crossover limited series connecting four of five of what were then Netflix’s various Marvel properties including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage.
The Variants #5 is written by Gail Simone, with cover and interior art by Phil Noto and letters by VC’s Cory Petit. The issue is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
