Marvel released a new teaser hinting at Groot’s death in an upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy series.
Marvel Comics released a new teaser for an upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy series with a caption that simply reads, “Grootfall Approaches…” While details are scarce at this time, the project is dated for April 2023. The publisher further teased, “Stay tuned to Marvel on social media for more teasers about what’s next for the Guardians and be there for the full announcement this Friday (Jan. 6, 2022)!”
Marvel announced a new Guardians of the Galaxy series at New York Comic-Con in Oct. 2022. At the time, the publisher also put out a teaser image showing a broken shield made out of wood with the Guardians of the Galaxy logo. Below the shield reads the caption, “How do you rebuild a family?” The creative team behind the series has not yet been revealed.
Where Have the Guardians of the Galaxy Been?
The Guardians of the Galaxy were last seen together in the main Marvel continuity in 2021’s Guardians of the Galaxy #18 by Al Ewing and Juan Frigeri. Since then, Marvel put out a Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind one-shot, which exists outside of Earth-616’s timeline and instead ties into Walt Disney World’s Cosmic Rewind attraction. Several Guardians of the Galaxy characters have shown up in other Marvel titles following the conclusion of the previous series, such as Rocket as when several mutant heroes ran into Rocket Raccoon on Gameworld in 2022’s X-Men #10 (by Gerry Duggan, Javier Pina, Marte Gracia and Clayton Cowles).
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Guardians recently started in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which was released on Disney+ in Nov. 2022. The team will return to big screens in 2023 for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is directed by James Gunn and scheduled to release theatrically on May 5. Starring Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Bradley Cooper as Rocket and Vin Diesel as Groot, the official synopsis for the film reads, “In Marvel Studios ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘ our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”
