Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter was introduced all the way back in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. The character was only seen once in the entire MCU. However, she returned to the What if …?. animated series that debuted on Disney+ in 2021. The viewers saw Captain Carter this time. This was a variation of the popular character. Peggy received the Super-Soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers in this situation.
Following What If…? , Captain Carter was seen in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness .. Atwell reprised her role, and the character was part of the Illuminati superhero team from the Earth-838 universe that Doctor Strange and America Chavez traveled to. When the Scarlet Witch used the Darkhold to possess her own body in the 838 universe, the Illuminati were forced to face off against her. The rest of the team, including Captain Carter, didn’t have much chance and were quickly eliminated.

The MCU’s Diverse Versions of Captain Carter

During the Marvel Studios animation panel at San Diego Comic-Con it was revealed that Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter, in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness , is different from the version of Hayley Atwell in What if …?. animation series. Many fans were skeptical that they could be the same characters. Michael Waldron, the head writer for the Doctor Strange sequel, recently made his own comments on the topic, saying that “that’d be too bad” if they were the same character.
According to ComicBook’s Brandon Davis What if …? director Bryan Andrews stated that seeing the character in live-action was “pretty awesome,” but also said that she was “some variant version” of the character from the animated series:
” It’s our Captain Carter, I think it’s vital to emphasize that. It’s a variant. “
Brad Winderbaum was the executive producer for What if …?. , agreed, and also added that “(their) Captain Carter wouldn’t have gone down like that. “
Captain Carter’s Future is Now Open
When What If…? was aired for the first time in 2006. Many fans were unsure how this would impact the future of MCU. A few questions were raised about whether characters from the series will appear in live action, and if the storylines from the show would be adapted into other projects.
The live-action Captain Carter in Doctor Strange was first shown in a television spot prior to the movie’s release . After the film was released, Wanda killed the character. The fandom did not know whether the character would appear in any future episodes of What if …?. , and possibly other projects. Although there was general agreement that they were different characters, no formal statement was made.
Now that Bryan Andrews and Brad Winderbaum have made it clear that they are not the same character, there will be more Captain Carter stories. The second season of What if …?? already has a release date of early 2023, and thanks to Marvel Studios’ animation panel at San Diego Comic-Con, it has already been confirmed that Captain Carter will be a part of the upcoming installment. It’s also important to mention What if …? was officially renewed for Season 3. Captain Carter fans can also expect her to be there.
