Fans are convinced that Deadpool 3 will be at Comic-Con International because of its timing.
Footage from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law seems all but certain for Marvel’s hour-long Saturday presentation at Comic-Con International in San Diego. However, fans are convinced the studio has something else — something bigger — up its sleeve for Hall H: namely, the official announcement of Deadpool 3.
Heated speculation on Twitter follows on the heels of the news that Deadpool, Deadpool 2 and Logan would be available on Disney+ beginning today, marking the platform’s first venture into R-rated films. Many fans cannot ignore the timing.
There is, of course, precedent: The announcement of the long-rumored Daredevil series reboot arrived in May, just two months after Marvel’s Netflix series were added to Disney+. Marvel reclaimed the rights to Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher in February 2021. Disney acquired the rights to Deadpool, Deadpool 2 and Logan in its 2019 purchase of 21st Century Fox.
The hand-wringing began almost immediately about the future of Deadpool, whose foul mouth and over-the-top violence hardly meshes with the more gentle tone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, star Ryan Reynolds was quick to assure fans Deadpool 3 was in development at Disney. Any remaining questions about the sequel’s rating in a PG-13 cinematic universe were put to rest by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who promised an R sequel to 2018’s Deadpool 2. Marvel does not have any plans to make R-rated MCU movies.
Feige confirmed in August 2021 that Deadpool 3 already had a spot on the studio’s release schedule. He didn’t give a date, which is not surprising. Reynolds, who last year said there’s a chance Deadpool 3 could begin filming in 2022 — “”I’d say it’s 50/50,” maybe?” Reynolds said last year that Deadpool 3 could begin filming in December. It remains to be determined if he meant to refer to Comic-Con.
Reynolds has said that, before Disney’s purchase of Fox, Deadpool 3 was planned as a “Rashomon-style” road trip featuring Wade Wilson and Logan. He added, “For real.” This is apparently in spite of Hugh Jackman insisting that he hasn’t finished playing Wolverine.
Shawn Levy, who directed Reynolds in Free Guy and The Adam Project, will helm Deadpool 3, which is written by Bob’s Burgers veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote 2018’s Deadpool, and collaborated with Reynolds on the 2018 sequel, were previously attached.
Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation begins Saturday at 5 p.m. PT at Comic-Con International in San Diego.
