Excelsior! Stan Lee and an Unforgettable Marvel Legacy
Born Stanley Lieber, Lee’s work in the comics industry began all the way back in 1939 as an assistant for Timely Comics working in their then-new division owned and operated by Martin Goodman. Timely would eventually be rebranded as Marvel Comics, with many of the characters created by Lee, Steve Ditko, Bill Everett and Jack Kirby going on to become breakout hits and household names alike.
Although Lee would step away from the majority of his regular Marvel duties in the 1980s and 90s, his popularity among fans and status as the face of the company never waned. This led Lee to make cameo appearances throughout various Marvel properties, including in the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as in genre films such as 1995’s Mallrats. Lee’s passing in 2018 was mourned by fans around the world.
Lee’s 100th birthday is also being celebrated outside of Marvel Comics with the release of DC Comics’ Tales from Earth-6: A Celebration of Stan Lee. The anthology one-shot features ten different stories featuring characters from Lee’s classic Just Imagine series, which saw the Marvel icon reimagine DC’s greatest heroes for a new era. These included a pro-wrestler-turned-Batman, a demonic Shazam and a Peruvian activist with supernatural powers known as Wonder Woman.
Lee’s likeness has been honored over the years, with one of the most notable iterations of him in pop culture having recently been brought to life on Amazon Prime’s The Boys. Paul Reiser portrayed the Legend, a character from The Boys comics who is an homage to Lee, in the show’s third season. The Legend is an esteemed, retired comic book creator who helps the eponymous team in their war against Vought and their corporate-sponsored superheroes.
