Marvel’s Midnight Suns has been getting a ton of comparisons to XCOM, though the game shares far more similarities with the Fire Emblem series while still innovating in many ways. One of the most obvious comparisons is the segments of the game that take place in the Abbey, which serves as the base of operations for the Midnight Suns. While exploring the Abbey, players can talk with various team members, customize their character’s look, and even uncover many of the Abbey’s secrets.
To find everything hidden around the Abbey, players need to unlock the four Words of Power. These commands allow players to access new locations within the Abbey, making them essential for secret hunters. Once players unlock a Word of Power, they simply have to pull up the Word of Power menu and select the one they want to use. These Words of Power aren’t easy to come by, as many are locked behind specific puzzles and trials.
How To Unlock Open
The first Word of Power that players will come by is also by far the easiest to unlock. After progressing through the first couple of missions, players will be instructed to visit Agatha’s Shrine. Once there, Agatha’s spirit will appear and guide players toward a Blood Gate that will open up to a small cave. Once inside, players will be given a simple puzzle that requires them to take a Moon Seal off a nearby pedestal and place it on a column.
This will launch players into a fight against a horde of demon dogs. Players won’t be alone, however, as they’ll also have the hellhound Charlie on their side. It’s by no means a difficult fight as both The Hunter and Charlie deal enough damage to one-shot the demon dogs. After completing the fight, players will receive the “Open” Word of Power, allowing them to unlock various magically sealed doors throughout the Abbey.
How To Unlock Reveal
Unlocking Reveal requires players to first find four Elemental Rods scattered throughout the Abbey. While these can technically be discovered at any point, players should aim to complete the first Agatha quest before doing so. Upon unlocking Open, she’ll request that The Hunter visit her in the library the following night. Upon doing so, players will acquire notes that mark the location of all four Elemental Rods on their map, making tracking them down much easier.
Once players find all four rods, they should make their way to a Blood Gate near the Standing Stones. Simply unlocking the gate will be enough to trigger a new trial, this time requiring players to defeat a much larger group of demon dogs in under four turns. This is a far trickier battle than the first, though completing it will reward The Hunter with a new Word of Power. Reveal has a few uses, such as repairing broken bridges throughout the Abbey and revealing hidden keys. An eye symbol on the ground will indicate that Reveal can be used.
How To Unlock Purify
Getting access to Purify will take a bit longer than the previous two, as this Word of Power is technically locked behind story progression. The Moon Seal that unlocks Purify’s Blood Gate can be unlocked by defeating Venom in a quest offered by Doctor Strange. Players will also need to help Agatha locate Witch Covens and Stained Soil to gain access to the area where Purify’s Blood Gate is located. After fulfilling both of these requirements, players can head east of Agatha’s Cabin to find the Blood Gate.
The story progression requirement is likely there to allow players to properly level before taking on the next combat trial. Purify’s trial really ramps up the difficulty once again, so players are advised to head into it prepared. The Word of Power itself allows The Hunter to clear green vines that block several pathways throughout the Abbey. Once players have the first three Words of Power, they can start working toward unlocking the fourth and final one.
How To Unlock Break
Break can be used to destroy ruined walls and piles of rocks, often revealing Arcane Chests in the process. Break requires players to collect four Moon Seal shards scattered throughout the Abbey. Players can find the first shard north of the Garden of Envy, located behind vines that require Purify to get past. From here, players should head east of the Garden of Envy and use Open to get past a locked door to find the second shard. The third is west of Everflowing Glade on a wooden platform along some cliffs, requiring the use of Purify once again to access.
After collecting the first three shards, players can speak to Agatha. After a quick fetch quest to grab a flower from her cabin, Agatha will create the fourth and final Moonseal shard. With the Moonseal assembled, players should head to the Blood Gate just to the north of Lilith’s Garden to begin their final combat trial. Being the final Word of Power, Break’s trial is without a doubt the most challenging. If players aren’t at the recommended level of 16, they’ll likely struggle with completing it.
