A big part of Annihilation‘s appeal is that it did a phenomenal job reintroducing Marvel’s cosmic characters to a modern audience. This is an outer space populated by so many great personalities, whether it be the no-nonsense Drax or Ronan the Accuser, who enforces his dark brand of justice across the stars. Nova and Silver Surfer also proved to be remarkably strong leads in their own tie-ins, given really fascinating arcs and plenty of iconic moments that showed off their spectacular superhero feats. As such, the creators were able to effortlessly drill down to the core of these characters and perfectly distilled what makes them so compelling.
Fundamentally, Annihilation is a space opera set in the backdrop of the Marvel Universe. This galaxy-spanning epic was pure fun, assembling Marvel’s cosmic powerhouses together in such a satisfying way. It was a science-fiction adventure for the ages, featuring memorable characters, an action-packed plot and a grand scale.
