Marvel Snap is the latest Marvel Universe mobile game to hit the market, with the card-based title already becoming a huge hit on app stores everywhere. Despite this popularity, the game has its detractors, namely those looking for a legitimate challenge. That’s because many players believe that their most common opponents aren’t actual humans.

Marvel Snap has a definite problem when it comes to bots, and it makes playing the game a bit of a drag at times. From removing the difficulty to adding too much, these bots completely ruin the experience of what is otherwise a fun game. Here’s how Marvel Snap players can recognize if they’re pulled from a bad deck and come up against one of the game’s many bots.

One thing that can make or break competitive free-to-play games, especially of the mobile variety, is the presence of bots. In many cases, these AI opponents are used to make the game’s mechanics easy to understand for newcomers. After all, a brand-new game can initially be difficult to wade through, let alone master, so players need a steady supply of opponents to get the hang of the game and level up their characters. Marvel Snap is no different, utilizing bots in the earliest section to act as a tutorial for battling decks of cards. Getting past the Recruit Season Pass and other early parts of the game means that these bots’ presence should begin diminishing, paving the way for players around the world to battle it out with their favorite Marvel characters.

It’s been hypothesized that the prevalence of these bots could and should begin to lower dramatically once a player reaches Rank 30. Of course, if a match can’t be made between two players quickly, the game will pit its users against AI opponents. This is perfectly understandable given that the game hasn’t been out for that long, but the overwhelming presence of these bots has made them a bit of a nuisance to some players. Given their traits, it’s easy to recognize whether an opponent in Marvel Snap is the real deal or simply another computer-generated fighter.

There are a few notable traits that separate legitimate opponents in Marvel Snap from mere bots. For one, a bot may continually make moves that put them at a disadvantage, essentially throwing the match in the player’s favor. This is especially the case earlier in the game, as the players are being eased into the mechanics. Further, these bots, in an attempt to make them seem more “human,” will many times have simplistic, regular names. Actual players with their own chosen usernames will have something more complex most times, with the more monosyllabic monikers such as Joe or Bill being telltale signs of a computer opponent.

Just as players will have their own unique, often clever names, they’ll usually do the same for their profile. Bots, on the other hand, will stick with more basic avatars, often the shadowy-faced beginning avatar. When they choose to get more complex, however, it means that players are in for a less-than-fair challenge. Later levels of bots will always have the necessary advantage over the player, always being two or more steps ahead and automatically having cards in their hands that let them win matches easily.

There’s no real strategy in facing them, as they always have the perfect deck needed to negate a player’s best tactics. Thus, it could be surmised that the easy levels of the earliest bots are just a ruse luring players in for a rude awakening. The best way for the player base of Marvel Snap to overcome this problem is for more players to join the fold, as this will help dilute the bot presence with actual human opponents. Unfortunately, the current onslaught of bots may scare away anyone currently looking to get into the mobile Marvel card game.
