Ghost Spider has become an increasingly multiversal hero. She works with other versions of herself to defend other worlds. The circumstances in which her universe’s history is erased and then rewritten may be worse than if it were just destroyed.
Spider-Gwen: Gwen-Verse #4 (by Tim Seely, Jodi Nishijima, Juan Fernandez, Protobunker’s Fernando Sifuentes, and VC’s Ariana Maher) deleted the history of Earth-65 and created a new one — which is subtly a more frightening prospect than simple annihilation.
Ghost Spider has been drawn into one of the most consequential and dangerous adventures she’s ever had. It involves entire worlds at risk. The mysterious, tragic Finale devised a plan for rewriting her timeline. She also reinvented Gwen’s variations in the process. Attempting to round up all the Gwens and prevent further changes to Earth-65’s history, the team finds its greatest challenge awaiting them in a time period synonymous with the present day. Gwen Stacy, who was Mar-Vell’s body’s last physical form, became Captain Marvel in this altered timeline. This Gwen took the Nega-Bands, a cosmically-enabled device for her own use. She was then granted the power to lend her body and help the hero.
But, when Gwen Stacy (demented) who was able to survive Heroes reborn exposes that the Kree is on a mission to Captain Marvel’s life, she attacks the Supreme Intelligence. The Kree Overlord becomes frustrated and decides to overload Nega-Bands until they are destroyed. The resulting explosion, despite Captain Marvel and Gwen’s willingness to take their lives to avoid some harm, is truly enormous. Spider-Zero saves the Gwens, who have an inborn connection with the Web of Life that allows them to be spared. Gwen must watch, however, as Captain Marvel’s death changes her timeline irrevocably.
It is the alien hero who has been blamed for all the damage, turning people against the heroes. As people abandon superheroes more often, they look back at old gods such as the Asgardians to guide them. George Stacy is one of the many heartless, cold-blooded armored police officers. There is still a possibility of her world being restored if Finale can be defeated, but it’s worth noting the high stakes. There are many terrifying elements in the Marvel Multiverse that could wipe out reality, including Incursions.
In the event of an Incursion entire realities may be destroyed. If someone does not intervene, they can also cause two simultaneous destructions. It is haunting to have a timeline that has been completely overridden. This makes it less likely it can ever be restored. It was demonstrated in the Fallout of Secret Wars , that even though destroyed worlds can be restored, there is no way to recover the hope once it existed. Earth-65 needs to somehow be restored in a way that may not even be possible in order for heroes to keep their spirit and live on.
In addition, altering reality’s history, rather than creating divergent realities, can threaten the stability and security of the multiverse. Incursions are even scarier than the theoretical terror of seeing entire lives erased. At the very least, Incursions can be reversed with enough power.
