Director Taika Waititi is returning, so fans can expect plenty of laughs in Thor: Love and Thunder. When Waititi took over Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, he injected Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder with humorous antics, allowing him to shine through the film’s action sequences. Even while the stakes are upped in the impending sequel, a classic and funny moment has made its way online and received an amazing response from fans.

Hemsworth’s bare-ass scene from the official trailer for Thor 4 is at issue here. After Zeus removed Thor’s cape with a flick of his fingers in the trailer’s final seconds, a humorous shot of Hemsworth’s muscular bare physique appeared.
Hemsworth and Waititi have both spoken out against the much-talked-about moment from Love and Thunder, which has received a lot of attention on social media.
Chris Hemsworth Addresses Bare Ass Scene in Thor 4
Chris Hemsworth spoke with Variety about his bare-ass scene in Thor: Love and Thunder during the film’s premiere.
This isn’t the first time Hemsworth’s butt has been in a film, as he pointed out near the beginning of the interview.
“I had my [ass] out in Rush many years ago. In a Marvel film, it was on a very large screen. It was a very big pair of cheeks. I don’t know. I’ve seen them before. Whatever.”
This scenario had been in the works for “10 years” when asked if he performed a lot of squats to get it right.
“I did a lot of everything. It was 10 years in the making, that scene — kind of a dream of mine. The first time I played Thor I took my shirt off and I thought, ‘You know what’s gonna sweeten this…’”
Waititi and Marvel producer Brad Winderbaum came up with the idea, according filmmaker Waititi in a Variety interview.
“I want to take the credit, but me and [producer] Brad [Winderbaum] talked about it and we said, ‘We’ve got to show the body.’ My whole thing was like, ‘We’ve got to show it off. Don’t cover it up with all these suits and capes.”
Thor: Love and Thunder’s director of photography, Barry Baz Idoine, said to Deadline what it was like to picture Chris Hemsworth’s crotch throughout the filming process:
“It’s incredibly hard to shoot Chris Hemsworth’s butt. I mean nobody concentrates. Nobody does their job. Everybody is looking at the butt and not looking at what they’re supposed to be doing.”
Hemsworth and Waititi continued their discussion of the funny butt moment in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
While Hemsworth first quipped that he was forced to return for Thor 4 due to “a contractual commitment,” Waititi crashed the interview with hilarity. It was shortly clarified by the director that it happened “in the movie,” as the Thor actor quipped that the director had taken his pants off.
ET: “What is it about Taika that is, like, very special, and that made you wanna come back again?”
Hemsworth: “Obviously a contractual obligation. If it was my choice it wouldn’t have happened.”
Hemsworth: “Oh yeah, you took my pants off didn’t you?” [Upon Waititi’s crashing of the interview]
Waititi: “In the movie! In the movie.”
With all due candor, Waititi revealed to The Guardian that Hemsworth was “completely unaware” that they were filming the sequence with him butt-naked:
“He didn’t even know we were shooting. He didn’t even know there were cameras rolling at all.”
It was “a lot of work” for Hemsworth to lose weight for Love and Thunder, he said in an interview.
“It was a lot of work to get ready. But, I mean, it was kind of 10, 11 years in the making, that shot. In each film, we’ve taken off another item of clothing, and now we just kind of took it all off. And that was all [Taika Waititi’s] doing.”

The bare-ass sequence in Thor: Love and Thunder was made possible by Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi’s strong on-screen and off-screen relationship. After working together in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame, this is their third collaboration.
It’s safe to assume that Waititi won Hemsworth’s trust when it came to showing off his backside in the movie, and based on their humorous conversation, it looks like it all went flawlessly. That Hemsworth said that it was “sort of a dream” of his to strip off in a Marvel film only adds to the popularity of this funny scene..
His fourth solo movie, Ragnarok, makes him one of only two Avengers to have his bare butts exposed on the big screen, alongside Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. It was also the first time an MCU film acquired a PG-13 rating because of “partial nudity,” making Love and Thunder the first MCU film to receive this distinction.
A blurred-out scene of Chris Hemsworth’s rear was shown in the trailer, but the final cut should not be in the same form.
On July 8, Thor: Love and Thunder will open in theaters.
