The Lord of the Rings is still a beloved trilogy, watched to this day and discussed at length among fans. And while LotR is not without its flaws, its lovable characters and fantastic story have truly permeated the hearts of millions and left an incredible legacy behind. The trilogy set the bar for all other future fantasy films.
One character who can never be topped is Aragorn, son of Arathorn, heir of Isildur. Aragorn is a ranger with deep courage and a fighting spirit, destined for greatness. There are some comparisons that can be made between Aragorn and other fictional characters, even if they don’t entirely measure up.
10/10 Duncan Is A Committed Immortal
Highlander
Aragorn has an extended life expectancy, just like Highlander’s Duncan Macleod. The difference is that Duncan is immortal, whereas Aragon does eventually reach the end of his life. Duncan fell in love with a few women over his lifetime, including mortals, and mortality plays a huge part in Aragorn and his love for Arwen.
There is also a commitment between these two warriors to fight against evil. Duncan has a very compassionate and human side to his nature, like Aragorn, which is why he saves so many people.
9/10 Neo Is Quiet & Unsuspecting
The Matrix
The hugely popular Matrix franchise follows protagonist Neo on his journey from blue pill to red pill and beyond, uncovering a prophecy that suggests he shall be the one to free humanity. Aragorn finds himself on a similar journey, from ranger to fellowship member saving Middle-Earth to King.
Neo and Aragorn were both destined for greatness. They’re unsuspecting at first with a quiet disposition, possibly because there is no need to speak. Actions speak for them, and they’re both more than capable of holding their own in battle.
8/10 Kili Also Loved An Elf
The Hobbit
Kili and Aragorn are strikingly similar in looks. Kill is a hobbit, so he’s shorter in height, but both he and Aragorn have shoulder-length black hair and rugged good looks. Aragorn and Kili are also both of royal blood, with The Hobbit character being of the line of Durin.
Interestingly, Kili and Aragorn have seemingly doomed-to-fail love affairs with elves, Kili with Tauriel and Aragon with Arwen. Furthermore, while Kili uses a bow and Aragorn uses a blade, they’re both exceptionally skilled and have mastered their weapons.
7/10 Katara Is Compassionate
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Compassion is what connects Aragorn and Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender. But there is also loneliness, as Katara loses her family, and Aragorn is a lone ranger without his true love.
Despite the losses in their lives, the kindness doesn’t fade. In fact, it makes Katara even more tender-hearted. She and Aragorn both have a strong sense of justice and want to do what is right. Katara joins the Avatar, Aang, on his journey and becomes a master of waterbending. Aragorn goes on an adventure of his own and is an incredibly skilled warrior.
6/10 Eddard Has A Code Of Honor
Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones’ Lord Eddard Stark shares many characteristics with Aragorn. They’re both natural-born leaders with a code of honor. While Ned does all he can to protect his children, Aragorn goes to great lengths to protect the hobbits.
They’re both good people at their core, always attempting to do what’s right. Ned and Aragorn are also both good with a sword. It is their weapon of choice, but they only use it when they have to. Ned and Aragorn are both very skilled warriors and can handle themselves on the battlefield.
5/10 Luke Has Wisdom & Patience
Star Wars
Luke Skywalker was a rash young boy who grew into a patient and caring man. While Star Wars’ Luke was wise, he was also naive and believed that even someone like Darth Vader was not beyond reach and could come back to the light side.
The characteristics can also be easily applied to Aragorn. He, too, is patient and good and, like Luke, represents light and goodness. Also, like Aragorn, Luke has magic in his bones. It is central to who they both are, Aragorn as a Númenórean and Luke as a Jedi.
4/10 Katniss Sacrifices Herself
The Hunger Games
In The Hunger Games, Katniss shows a true commitment to those she loves when she volunteers as tribute for her sister. Aragorn shows the same love and dedication to Frodo when he offers him his sword and tells him that he would’ve gone with him into the fires of Mount Doom.
Both Katniss and Aragorn seem to underestimate themselves at times, not understanding the acclaim and celebration that follows them. But it is clear to everybody else. They’re both fighters through and through, with good hearts and inspiring courage. That courage takes Katniss into the Hunger Games more than once, and it’s the reason she survives.
3/10 Geralt’s Mission Is To Remove Evil
The Witcher
The Witcher’s Geralt of Rivia is another mysterious figure from the shadows who travels from place to place, killing monsters for coin. That is his purpose as a Witcher and what he has trained his entire life to do. However, Witchers only kill those who are monsters at heart, not in looks alone. This is what is right, and Aragorn is also always aiming to do the right thing.
Like Geralt, Aragorn goes on a mission in The Lord of the Rings to remove true evil from the world. And it is his sole purpose during this stage of his life, with every moment dedicated to destroying the One Ring. Furthermore, they’re both very skilled fighters with tremendous courage.
2/10 Captain America Is Super Strong & Skilled
Marvel
Marvel’s Captain America, aka Steve Rogers, has enhanced strength and abilities, making him a superhero. He is America’s hero and a man of the people. Aragorn is also certainly a man of the people, as heir and future king. They’re also both very skilled fighters who put their lives on the line for others.
Just like Aragorn, Steve has a difference within him and in his blood, as he was injected with a super-serum. He was then frozen for 70 years. Aragon is a Númenórean who lives longer lives than men. And so, both Aragorn and Steve are blessed (or cursed) with knowledge beyond their expected years and hold true wisdom.
1/10 Jon Snow Has A Secret Destiny
Game of Thrones
At the beginning of GoT, Jon Snow is known for being a man of few words with a stoic nature. He was shrouded in mystery, and fans were unsure of his intentions, path, and parentage.
The comparisons between Jon and Aragorn are endless. Aragorn begins LotR as a ranger, hiding in the shadows, unknown. No one knows where his path leads. For both Jon and Aragorn, it is revealed that they have royal blood and are heirs to the throne. Furthermore, they’re both incredibly skilled fighters, brandishing swords in battle, and have a deeply humble nature.
