For all the cool costumes and powers, being a member of Marvel’s X-Men is more painful than it is fun. The heroes must deal with continual hatred, violence, and death. However, the X-Men have found refuge in friendship and love, something only bolstered by the wholesome members of the team.
Some of the X-Men’s teammates act as mentors, while others perform great acts of selflessness. Others are inspiring because of their own personal journeys. Despite the hardship the X-Men continually face, these mutants inspire their fellows as well as their readers to keep moving forward.
10/10 Synch Puts Others First
Everett Thomas joined the X-Men first as a member of Generation X, where he used his power-mimicking ability to aid his peers in battle and survival. Synch established himself as a goof-natured friend to the rest of the group as they battled Sentinels, bigots, and extremists.
Synch’s time with Generation X came to an end when he sacrificed his life to save a room full of human children from a bomb. Later, Synch was resurrected on Krakoa. Synch first offered his services to help the nation explore the extradimensional Vault and later became a founding member of the Krakoan X-Men.
9/10 Sunspot & Cannonball Are Best Friends
It is nearly impossible to talk about Cannonball without mentioning Sunspot (or vice versa). The two first met in the New Mutants’ first adventure and quickly became fast friends. While other aspects of these characters are important, the two’s friendship is a wholesome, defining feature.
Sam Guthrie and Bobby DaCosta have always been there for each other. The two have traveled through space and time, saved each other’s lives countless times and even joined the Avengers together. Sunspot was the best man at Guthrie’s wedding. Through thick and thin, Sunspot and Cannonball are best friends forever.
8/10 Laura Kinney Grew Beyond Her Difficult Past
While some might find ex-assassin Laura Kinney a strange pick for a wholesome member of the X-Men, the newest bearer of the Wolverine moniker has a surprisingly uplifting story. After starting life as a lab-grown hit clone, Wolverine’s life only improved after she linked up with her biological father and took ownership of her life.
After escaping her captors, Laura Kinney soon found the X-Men. Wolverine (Logan) began to mentor her, and she found common cause and camaraderie with the young mutants of the post-Decimation era. Kinney then became a mentor in her own right and helped found the new team of Krakoan X-Men.
7/10 Colossus Is Selfless
Piotr Rasputin first activated his mutant powers to save his younger sister from a runaway tractor. Since then, Colossus has continually sought to use his power to protect the world. While he has made mistakes, the steel-skinned shield of the X-Men has only ever acted to protect the best interests of his kind.
The most notable example of this is Colossus’s sacrifice to cure the Legacy Virus. All that was needed to finish the cure and spread it worldwide was for one mutant to inject it and activate their powers. However, this would kill the mutant. Colossus did this with little hesitation, ending the threat of the Legacy Virus.
6/10 Wolverine Is A Teacher
Like his daughter, Wolverine has a dark past. However, Wolverine’s time with the X-Men has greatly allowed his kinder side to flourish. Initially starting as a violent, rebellious loner, Logan grew into one of the X-Men’s kindest, most patient members on the team. After the X-Men helped Logan with his own trauma, he sought to help others.
Logan mentored mutants like Kate Pryde, Armor, Jubilee, and Laura Kinney, helping them become more confident people and heroes. Following the events of Schism, he led the creation of the Jean Grey School so young mutants would have somewhere to go. Though he has spilled his fair share of blood, Wolverine is one of the X-Men’s most compassionate members.
5/10 Kate Pryde Has Maintained Her Zeal
Kate Pryde (formerly Kitty) joined the X-Men as a teenager attempting to escape the machinations of the White Queen. The wide-eyed teen became one of the X-Men’s most outspoken members as well as one of its best leaders. Since joining, Pryde never lost the fiery heart she first appeared with.
Pryde has died for the team, but she also has lived for the team. Pryde helped keep the reality-saving Excalibur together and was instrumental in reviving Colossus. On Krakoa, she became the leader of the Marauders, a band of sea-faring mutants who help save mutants from oppressive governments.
4/10 Nightcrawler Wants A Better World For Everyone
Between the deaths and rebirths, the robot uprisings and the government crackdowns, Nightcrawler is always there for his team. The fuzzy blue elf has never led an easy life, but he has ever moved through it with wit, compassion, and grace. After spending an early life fleeing persecution, Kurt Wagner became determined to never let anyone feel unwelcome.
This has taken a myriad of forms. Nightcrawler has led teams like Excalibur and helped welcome cross-dimensional refugees to the 616. On Krakoa, Nightcrawler works as a member of the Quiet Council emphasizing equality and fairness while interrogating the ethics of Krakoa’s three laws.
3/10 Jubilee Never Stops Trying To Help
Jubilee has always been a bright spot among the X-Men. After joining during the team’s Outback era, Jubilation Lee’s spunk and vivacity quickly made her stand out. Jubilee later left the team to join Generation X, where she used her experience to help shepherd her less-worldly teammates through the complicated world of mutant superheros.
Jubilee has always worked to help others. Even after losing her powers, Lee donned a technological suit and remained a superhero. Later, Lee adopted an orphaned baby. Jubilee has come to dote on Shogo, ensuring that her child will grow to have a safe and happy life.
2/10 Hope Won’t Give Up
The first mutant born after M-Day, Hope Summers has meant a lot of things to a lot of people. Dubbed the “Mutant Messiah,” Hope has had to navigate the difficulties of her own life while also managing the expectations of others. Through innumerable struggles, Summers has never given up.
Hope has used her experience as a fugitive and mutant to help others. This was notable in gathering and giving support to the Lights, a new generation of mutants. On Krakoa, Hope became a hugely important figure, using her powers as one of the Five to rebirth many mutants who had been killed.
1/10 Scout Inspires Others
Gabby Kinney is one of ten clones created from Wolverine by the same group that raised Laura Kinney. Trained as a child soldier/bodyguard, Gabby escaped with the help of some of her sister clones. However, she disagreed with their violent actions and joined with Laura Kinney instead.
In spite of all the trauma she has faced, Scout (sometimes Honey Badger) has never lost her positive attitude. First acting as a kid sister to Laura and later the rest of the Wolverines, Gabby’s youthful enthusiasm and good humor have helped remind the X-Men of the future they are fighting for.
