The X-Men in the Krakoa Era have had some amazing adventures. 2022 has been a big year for all the X-Men books, with new titles Immortal X-Men focusing on the Quiet Council and X-Men Red taking place on Arakko. All the various X-Men books have had some big storylines, but some members have been left in the lurch in a variety of ways.
Because of this, certain X-Men have been rather underrated by the creators this year. While some X-Men are getting pushed to the moon for all kinds of reasons, other stalwart X-Men are being heavily underused and underappreciated.
10/10 Cable Has Made Relatively Few Appearances
Cable’s life in the X-Men’s darkest future prepared him for anything, as he’s proven over the years. The Krakoa Era has been interesting for Cable. It began with the younger version of Cable as the star of his own solo book, and he’d eventually act as head of security in SWORD. That book suffered from having too big a cast and always being in crossovers, so no one was well treated.
The older version of Cable has taken over again, and he’s in SWORD‘s sequel X-Men Red. He’s appeared in relatively few issues of the book, since it’s mostly been focused on Arakko. Cable is a great character and his minor place in the book is a huge problem.
9/10 Polaris Was Completely Misused In X-Men
2021 saw X-Men (Vol. 6) launched with a new team, and Polaris was one of the members. The daughter of Magneto is a powerful mutant with a lot of potential, especially now that she’s on her own. However, the book made her into a clichéd trope who always wore her glasses and had a coffee. It was an awful conception of the character.
Like most of the cast of X-Men going into 2022, Polaris was terribly misused. When the new Hellfire Gala hit, she was taken off the team, which is a blessing and a curse for her. Polaris is an X-Man that needs to define herself, but no one is giving her a change. However, getting out of X-Men is a blessing.
8/10 Rogue Is Too Good For What Happened To Her In 2022
Rogue was yet another X-Men legend who was put on the team in 2021 and had nothing done with her. X-Men (Vol. 6) often felt like the place good characters went to die and Rogue peaked early in the series’ run. The 2022 issues saw her become what is basically a background character, which is terrible for an X-Man as popular and well known as Rogue is.
Rogue should be a big part of any team she’s on, but the Krakoa Era has seen her woefully underused in general by writers like Tini Howard and Gerry Duggan. 2022 was even worse for her, as she was in the ostensible flagship book for half the year and didn’t do anything worthy of the beloved character she is.
7/10 Sunspot Is Too Good For Being A Junior Partner In X-Men Red
The New Mutants has created great heroes, with Sunspot being among the team’s most decorated members. Sunspot has been a New Mutant, a member of X-Force, an X-Man, and an Avenger. He’s got everything that a superhero needs. He has awesome powers based on absorbing solar energy, and he’s hilarious, fun, as well fabulously wealthy.
Sunspot is a character that fans always want to see more of, but it rarely happens. X-Men Red felt like a good place for him, but even though he’s a part of the Arakko main trio, he’s the least used. Sunspot is a charming character with amazing powers, but he doesn’t get the play his A-list co-stars, Storm and Magneto.
6/10 Mirage Can Never Escape The New Mutants
The New Mutants are pretty scary, with Mirage among the team’s most potent members. A member of the Cheyenne tribe, her mental powers allow her to manifest weapons made of psionic energy, with her favorite being the bow and arrow. She’s also acted as a Valkyrie, something that came in handy after she lost her powers on M-Day.
Mirage is a fan favorite character who can rarely if ever leave the New Mutants. She’s a character with A-list potential, but she never gets to be on the A-list teams. Mirage got some spotlight in New Mutants, but she deserves even more.
5/10 Wolverine May Have His Own Title But He’s On A B-List Team
When it comes to the most reliable X-Men, Wolverine is a cut above the rest. Wolverine is the only mutant with a solo title and who stars in a team book, X-Force. That could make him seem like he’s not underrated, but this is Wolverine. He’s at a Spider-Man level of popularity and has barely made any extra appearances outside his solo and team book.
Wolverine is easily the most popular X-Man, but he’s on a B-list team book that he isn’t even the star of. Again, this is Wolverine. He’s neck and neck with Spider-Man, Marvel’s most popular character. The fact he’s not everywhere is underrating just how great a draw he is.
4/10 Jean Grey Got One Big Spotlight, But That’s It
The X-Men’s Omega class X-Men are more important than ever. Jean Grey is an Omega, but she’s also been jumping around a lot in the Krakoa Era. She went from a member of the Quiet Council and a part of the cast of X-Force to X-Men, which is a step-down. Her focus issue of the book was in 2021, and like other characters, she’s barely done anything in X-Men in 2022.
Jean Grey is the patron saint of the X-Men, so for her to be so badly used in X-Men is a travesty. She was much better used in A.X.E. Judgment Day, getting a tie-in issue about her. Jean Grey is an amazing character and an iconic X-Man, something she barely got a chance to show in 2022.
3/10 Synch Hasn’t Been Given A Personality At All
Synch never got a chance to shine post-Generation X, until the Vault issues of X-Men (Vol. 5). Those comics made readers excited for him again. Everyone was happy for him to become a member of the cast of X-Men (Vol. 6) in 2021. However, of all the misused characters in that book, he was the worst. He was basically just used as someone who could clone powers, and that’s it.
Synch did have a few cool action scenes in 2022, but there was nothing of him as a character that was worth doing. His one storyline was secretly mindwiping Ben Urich, which was completely out of character for him. Fans were excited for him to get a big role and nothing interesting has come of it.
2/10 Sunfire Is Yet Another Wasted X-Man
X-Men history is full of second chances. However, some mutants on their third and fourth chances. Sunfire’s inclusion in 2021’s X-Men (Vol. 6) seemed like it would be a big deal and finally give the C-list mutant a chance to shine. That didn’t happen at all.
Sunfire never got a spotlight issue, except for a fight with Feilong on Phobos that he lost. This is a tragedy because Sunfire has so much potential, both as an arrogant agent of chaos and a powerful hero. He’s basically a blank slate and any writer should love to get a chance to use him.
1/10 Wolverine Has The Appearances But She Was Thrown Into The B-List
Laura’s tenure as Wolverine has been great and her return to the mantle in the Krakoa Era was a big deal. She’s yet another character who was put into X-Men (Vol. 6), riding high from her appearances in the Vault issues of Vol. 5. She fared just as well as Synch, though, except she had no actual story arc during her time in the book.
Laura left in the 2022 Hellfire Gala issue. She’s now in X-Terminators, but she was definitely underrated in 2022. She could have been a breakout star, but the year has been a bit of a bust. At least things started to look up towards the end of the year in X-Terminators.
