To be a superhero, people need to believe they can count on the individual, especially if they’re part of a team. For a group like the Avengers, whose adventures have brought them across galaxies, that reliability is all the more critical.
The dozens of superheroes who have joined the Avengers over the years are all reliable to some degree, but some of these heroes can be counted on more than others. Whether they be long-standing members or more recent recruits, these members of Earth’s Mightiest are dedicated to helping their team, their teammates, and their cause.
10/10 Wolverine and Spider-Man Are Tied For Best New(ish) Member
Though they did not join the team until the early-aughts New Avengers, Wolverine and Spider-Man quickly became some of the Avengers’ staunchest members. After the original team was taken down in Disassembled, Captain America and Iron Man were not disappointed by their new recruits.
Since their joining, neither Wolverine nor Spider-Man has been very far from the team. The unlikely pair of friends helped bring the New Avengers through Civil War and Dark Reign, enter the Heroic Age, and regularly answer the call to assemble whenever it has gone out. In Wolverine’s case, his commitment to the Avengers has made fans joke he must have identical clones.
9/10 Wonder Man Provides Constructive Criticism
Wonder Man is a classic member of the Avengers, a hero gifted with prodigious strength and invulnerability through the experiments of Baron Zemo. Among other things, Simon Williams helped the Avengers fight in Operation: Galactic Storm and, alongside Hawkeye, founded the West Coast team.
Though he has been critical of the group at times, Wonder Man’s actions have always been in an effort to improve the greater good. Williams has particularly criticized the Avengers’ use of violence and its effects on others. His attempts to hold the group accountable have led to thoughtful decision-making on the team and reassessing their violence.
8/10 Monica Rambeau Quickly Proved Herself
While Monica Rambeau’s initial tenure on the team was cut far too short, she has secured her place as one of the team’s most reliable members. As a former harbor patrol lieutenant, Rambeau brought leadership experience, a can-do attitude, and her electromagnetic powers.
Rambeau’s first run with the team saw her fight on Battleworld, survive the destruction of the Mansion, and eventually become its leader. Rambeau, then going by Photon, led heroes like Thor and Captain America into battle against the Olympian Gods and the X-Men. Following this, Rambeau would serve as the team’s de facto backup leader.
7/10 Vision Is Determined To Help The Avengers Succeed
The Vision has been many things in his life, but Avenger is first among them. Created initially as an enemy of the team, the Vision quickly found the logical flaws in his original programming and joined the side of the angels.
Vision’s devotion to the Avengers has bordered on the megalomaniacal. In addition to helping the Avengers halt one world-ending menace after the other, Vision once sought to take over all the world’s computers to help the Avengers further achieve their goals. While his methods may sometimes err too close to his father, Ultron, Vision is undoubtedly devoted to his team.
6/10 Black Panther Will Always Help The Avengers
T’Challa may keep the interests of Wakanda foremost in his heart, but it is the Avengers who come next. After he saved the team from the Grim Reaper, they helped him retake Wakanda from M’Baku, creating a key reciprocal relationship.
T’Challa has ever been there for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, lending them his wealth, his kingdom, and his skill in battle time and again. He has also lent them his leadership ability, most recently in Jason Aaron’s run. The Black Panther is a stalwart member of the Avengers and can always be counted on to help the team when they need it most.
5/10 Captain Marvel Found A New Direction With The Team
Carol Danvers has led a uniquely varied life. After working as a security chief for an Air Force base, she spent alternate turns as a solo hero and ally of the X-Men before joining the Avengers, a team she would repeatedly return to before becoming one of its most critical members.
Recent years have seen Danvers become more strongly associated with the Avengers, but her true ownership of it began in the 00s. Captain Marvel (then-Ms. Marvel) was a vital part of the Mighty Avengers and the post-Dark Reign New Avengers, her powers and experience helping the Avengers through trial after trial.
4/10 She-Hulk Helps The Avengers In More Ways Than One
Though the Hulk may be more powerful, She-Hulk typically has far more control over her mentality. Jen Walters joined her cousin’s former team and quickly made an impact, showing herself as a reliable, good-natured, and devoted team member.
Though she has used her strength and invulnerability to aid the Avengers, Walters has also used her experience as a lawyer to help the team. Her legal capacity marks her as different from other, similarly-devoted heroes. In addition to being willing to physically fight injustice, She-Hulk can be counted on to help the Avengers in all matters of the law.
3/10 Luke Cage Always Wants To Help The Little Guy
The former Power Man was another of the team’s aughts recruits, helping assemble the New Avengers. Unlike many other recruits, Cage soon distinguished himself by taking a leadership role. Cage was a key figure for Captain America’s Secret Avengers, later leading various assemblages of the New, Mighty, and Secret Avengers.
Luke Cage sees the world like an ordinary person, which gives him an unquestionable dedication to the difference the Avengers can make. Among otherworldly gods and aliens who may have trouble empathizing with mortals, Cage knows that the Avengers can genuinely help the world. Cage’s desire to roll out this mission means his reliability can never be doubted.
2/10 Hawkeye Believes In The Avengers’ Power
The rebellious Hawkeye may seem a strange pick for reliability, but Earth’s Mightiest Marksman has stood by the Avengers since he first joined it. In addition to believing in the Avengers’ missions, the archer believes in the Avengers’ potential.
Joining the Avengers changed Hawkeye’s life, allowing him to grow from a two-bit criminal to a heroic mentor figure. This has inspired a fierce devotion to the team. Hawkeye’s devotion is made apparent by his repeated roster joinings, but exemplified by his constant mentoring of others and his own leadership for the group.
1/10 Captain America Inspires Others
Captain America means more to the Avengers than any other character. Cap is the team’s staunchest supporter, never failing to assemble or reassemble the group when it falls apart. Cap is a firm believer in himself and his teammates, contributing to their continued success.
Cap’s reliability lies partially because he inspires others. If Captain America calls, other heroes will always answer. Cap believes in the Avengers, and the rest of the Marvel Universe will help him uphold that belief. Cap’s reliability and the reliability he inspires in others make him the team’s most reliable member.
