As far as Marvel Comics superheroes go, Riri Williams is very new to the scene, being created in 2016. Although she hasn’t had nearly as long of a history as other comic book heroes, Riri AKA Ironheart already has a pretty big list of accomplishments, one being the caliber of villains she’s faced.
After making her own version of Tony Stark’s Iron Man armor, Stark supported Riri’s choice to become a superhero. This led her to becoming involved in the Civil War II crossover event and eventually joining the Champions. Through her time as a solo hero, fighting in the second Marvel civil war, and working with The Champions, Riri went up against several iconic Marvel villains.
10/10 Riri Went Toe-To-Tentacle With The Second Doctor Octopus
Caroline Trainer may not be the most famous Doctor Octopus, but she has been around for quite some time. She first took over as Doctor Octopus after Otto Octavius’ death, and upon his return, she changed her name to Lady Octopus.
Ironheart went up against Lady Octopus in The Invincible Iron Man#8 by Brian Michael Bendis, Stefano Caselli, Marte Gracia, and Clayton Cowles. Association with a famous supervillain didn’t help the second Doc Ock too much in their fight, and Riri made quick work of defeating her.
9/10 Blackheart Tried To Corrupt Ironheart’s Mind
Blackheart might not be as famous as his dad, Mephisto, but he is still a pretty well-known Marvel villain. Unlike other villains, he didn’t confront Ironheart in a fight. Instead, Blackheart took a more indirect approach.
To turn The Champions against one another, Blackheart corrupted several members, including Ironheart. For Riri, defeating Blackheart wasn’t a matter of fighting him, but fighting her own internal demons that had been plaguing her regarding her feelings for her teammate Viv. When Riri finally accepted how she felt, she was able to fight off Blackheart’s influence and regain control.
8/10 Ironheart Joined The Alliance Against N’Jadaka AKA Killmonger
Erik Killmonger has been a thorn in Black Panther’s side for a long time. Thanks to his excellent portrayal in the MCU, Killmonger has become one of the standout Marvel villains to newer fans. In some more recent comics, Killmonger found himself in conflict with a large alliance of heroes, including Ironheart.
During Ta-Nehisi Coates’ run on Black Panther, Killmonger became ruler of The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda. Ironheart joined the climactic battle against his forces in Black Panther #7 by Coates, Daniel Acuña, and Joe Sabino. While Riri wasn’t the main focus of the story, it was great to see her get involved in taking down such an iconic villain.
7/10 Roxxon And C.R.A.D.L.E. Made Ironheart’s Heroics Illegal
The Roxxon Corporation in Marvel Comics is a massive oil and gas company. Roxxon has been involved in some over-the-top displays of villainy, such as allying itself with Malekith the Accursed so they could strip any planet he conquered of its fossil fuels.
One of Roxxon’s plans involved creating Kamala’s Law, which effectively outlawed minors from being superheroes. This led to the government organization C.R.A.D.L.E., which tried to arrest Riri and her fellow Champions for violating Kamala’s Law. While the law was eventually repealed, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Riri coming into conflict with Roxxon again, since the corporation can’t help but be terrible.
6/10 Ironheart Helped Stop A Hydra Takeover
Hydra is one of, if not the most, iconic villainous organizations in Marvel Comics. They have popped in a variety of different forms throughout the years, with different leaders, such as Baron von Strucker and Baron Zemo.
During the Secret Empire storyline, Ironheart helped fight off Hydra forces that were attempting to take over the United States. During this time, Riri ended up joining the Champions, and together they formed an underground resistance against Hydra and their allies.
5/10 The Ten Rings May Link Ironheart With A Classic Iron Man Villain
After parting ways with The Champions, Riri Williams found herself in conflict with The Ten Rings. The Ten Rings was a newer organization introduced in Ironheart, but its name suggested that they might have ties to some iconic Marvel villains.
When it comes to Marvel Comics, there are two main sets of ten rings. One is the ten rings Shang-Chi uses, meaning the organization could refer to the villain Xin who once tried to take the rings. Given Riri’s connection with Iron Man, however, it’s more likely the organization was somehow connected to Tony’s iconic nemesis, the Mandarin.
4/10 Ironheart Fought Captain Marvel When She Started Acting Villainous
Carol is definitely the most iconic Captain Marvel at this point, with previous incarnations like Mar-Vell fading into obscurity. While she isn’t usually a villain in Marvel Comics, she does prove to be a pretty formidable one when she makes a heel turn.
During Civil War II, Captain Marvel wanted to implement a Minority-Report-style crime prevention method by punishing criminals before they did anything wrong. This split the superhero community in two, with Riri joining her mentor Tony Stark against Captain Marvel.
3/10 Ironheart And The Champions Took On Hydra’s Captain America
Few comic book superheroes are as iconic as Captain America. Although his popularity has waxed and waned over the years, he’s currently one of the best-known Marvel heroes, and his brief stint as a villain got a lot of attention.
During the Secret Empire storyline, Steve Rogers was revealed to be a Hydra agent. Ironheart and The Champions were already fighting Hydra at the time and eventually came into conflict with Cap himself. The fight ended pretty disastrously for the heroes, with Black Widow dead and the Champions arrested for their efforts.
2/10 Riri Picked An Ill-Advised Fight With Thanos
Thanks to Avengers Infinity War and Endgame, Thanos is probably the most iconic Marvel supervillain to many fans. Even without a fully powered Infinity Gauntlet, The Mad Titan is a force to be reckoned with and has definitely earned his notoriety.
When Ironheart and The Champions went to space to save the Chitauri, they encountered Thanos. Riri made fans question her status as a super-genius when she recklessly decided to attack Thanos during their first encounter with him. Thanos easily disintegrated her Ironheart suit, but he spared her life since The Champions were there to help the Chitauri.
1/10 Ironheart Confronted Doctor Doom About Impersonating Iron Man
Thanos may be the most iconic Marvel villain to MCU fans, but comics fans know he isn’t quite as big a deal as Victor von Doom. Doctor Doom has defeated and even killed plenty of famous Marvel heroes, and his evil plans are always difficult to foil.
For a time, Doom took Tony Stark’s place, leading to the series The Infamous Iron Man. This is when Doom came into conflict with Riri Williams, who confronted him in her Ironheart armor. She didn’t like the villain tainting Tony’s legacy and wanted to put a stop to it. Surprisingly, her confrontation with Doom ended without a physical fight, after he fell unconscious.
