Over the years, the Avengers have included a slew of members, and each of those members has engaged in plenty of romantic entanglements, often with each other. Some fizzled relationships clearly ran their course, but others were perhaps cut short before they should have been.
For any number of reasons, heroes’ relationships have come to an end before the pair were ready. Some heroes were involved in love triangles, while others were too married to their work. A few even died, though that’s not always an insurmountable barrier in the Marvel Comics universe. On Earth-616, it’s never too late for heroes to give love another shot.
10/10 Thor and She-Hulk Were A Strong Couple
While Thor and She-Hulk were teammates in the Avengers, sparks began to fly between the powerful pair. Despite great chemistry and an awkward but ultimately charming first date fighting dinosaurs, eventually the romance fizzled when both Avengers’ lives got too complicated to focus on each other.
She-Hulk is one of the most relatable characters in Marvel Comics, and Thor is often known for his easy going ways. Both heroes are also very well-matched physically, meaning they never have to hold back with each other for fear of hurting their partner unintentionally. Nothing was really wrong with their romance; it just came at an awkward time for the heroes and never really got the chance it deserved.
9/10 Daredevil And Black Widow Were A Dangerous Team
Matt Murdock and Natasha Romanov first met when he represented her while she was on trial for a murder she didn’t commit. Sparks flew between the two, and after both were later single, they decided to start a relationship. They moved together to San Francisco, where they lived together and teamed up as heroes.
Eventually, Daredevil’s need for control and Black Widow’s need for independence, especially after her Russian brainwashing, began to clash. After Hawkeye showed up to compete for her affection, she got tired of both men and left. The relationship was extremely influential on both characters though, and now that they’ve both had time to grow and change, perhaps it’s time for them to try again.
8/10 Hawkeye And Mockingbird Could Be Lovebirds Again
In the MCU, Hawkeye had both a wife and a meaningful bond with Black Widow. In the comics, however, Hawkeye has had a lot of partners, but his most iconic pairing was with Bobbi Morse, a.k.a. Mockingbird. The two heroes fell in love almost immediately after being captured while investigating a villain, and were married soon after.
Hawkeye and Mockingbird formed the West Coast Avengers, and were happy for a while. After she was drugged and assaulted, she let the man who attacked her die, and this led to the argument that ultimately ended their marriage. Her subsequent replacement by a Skrull imposter further complicated matters. The two have continued to work together though, and clearly still care deeply for each other.
7/10 Wolverine And Hercules Were Soulmates In Another Reality
Casual Marvel fans may be surprised by this pairing, but it was a remarkably strong one. In X-Treme X-Men, these two ultra-muscled heroes from another realm of the multiverse were in a dedicated romantic relationship. They met while traveling on adventures, and began working together as their romance bloomed, despite their love being condemned by both of their leaders.
The relationship between Hercules and Wolverine (known in his own reality by his surname Howlett) ended after Hercules died during the “X-Termination” story arc. Howlett vowed that he would return to his reality and attempt to retrieve his lost love from the underworld. Perhaps readers haven’t heard the last of these star-crossed lovers from another reality.
6/10 Black Panther Made Storm Queen Of Wakanda
Storm grew up in Africa, where she was worshiped as a goddess for some time. Becoming the Queen of Wakanda was therefore a natural fit for her after she married T’Challa, the Black Panther and King of Wakanda. Black Panther and Storm were powerful allies, and a power couple in every sense of the phrase.
Black Panther and Storm had a strong and loving marriage, but their respective duties kept them apart a lot. Then, after Namor, empowered by the Phoenix Force, devastated Wakanda, T’challa declared the X-Men as enemies of Wakanda and annulled his marriage to Storm. Despite the circumstances that tore them apart, the pair were loving and respectful and maybe should try again, if they can work out the logistics.
5/10 Mantis Roamed The Galaxy With The Silver Surfer
Mantis was one of the stand-out stars from the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Her love life in Marvel Comics, however, has been less than stellar. After years of protecting the earth as a member of the Avengers, she left for space to have a child with a Cotati alien who took the form of her dead ex-lover. She had to leave the child with his father’s people, after which she began traveling with the Silver Surfer.
Romance bloomed between Mantis and the Silver Surfer on their journey, as they battled the Elders of the Universe. Sadly, Mantis was caught in an explosion that shattered her psyche into multiple entities, and the Silver Surfer believed she was dead. Enough time has passed now that perhaps it’s time for these two space travelers to try again.
4/10 Deadpool And Copycat Deserve More Time Together
Fans of the fourth-wall-breaking Deadpool movies are already familiar with the character Copycat, though they might not realize it. Copycat’s real name is Vanessa Carlyle. She became a sex worker after her parents kicked her out for being a Mutant, which is when she met and fell in love with Wade Wilson. After Wilson’s cancer diagnosis, however, he left her to join Weapon X.
Both Deadpool and Copycat were working as mercenaries, and the two were frequently sent to kill each other. Deadpool instead saved her life by forcing her to copy his healing factor. The two briefly rekindled their relationship, but she was killed by Sabretooth. Death is rarely final in Marvel Comics though, especially for Mutants these days.
3/10 Namor And Sue Storm Float Each Other’s Boats
Namor, ruler of Atlantis, is picky about the company he keeps. He’s not overly fond of land-dwellers either. There is one notable exception, however, which is Sue Storm. The Invisible Woman caught Namor’s eye, and he has never been able to shake his attraction to her.
Not only is Namor drawn to Sue, but she has chosen to be with him in the past, during a time when her relationship with now-husband Reed Richards was on the rocks. With Reed spending so much time on work, perhaps Sue should see what it’s like to be less of an invisible woman to her romantic partner.
2/10 Black Widow And Winter Soldier Have A Long History
Black Widow and the Winter Soldier have a lot in common. They were both brainwashed and forced to fight for Russia’s secret forces. While Black Widow was in training, the Winter Soldier would sneak into her room to see her, as their relationship was forbidden. Black Widow has had many relationships, but Bucky is one of her longest.
Over the years, Bucky and Natasha have broken up and gotten back together a number of times. While their work may be secretive, they communicated well with each other, and understood the difficulties each other faced. Perhaps the reason they keep coming back to each other is that their bond deserves another chance to grow.
1/10 Spider-Man And Black Cat Have An Animal Attraction
When most people think of Spider-Man’s great loves, they think of MJ, or possibly Gwen Stacy. There’s another woman, however, who may be a better match for the Web-Slinger, especially now that MJ has moved on with a new partner and step-kids. That woman is Felicia Hardy, a.k.a. Black Cat.
Spidey and MJ have had countless chances to make their relationship work, but keep failing. Felicia, on the other hand, has been incredibly loyal to Peter, despite their ups and downs. The pair now has a healthy friendship, which is the foundation for any strong relationship. And unlike MJ, Black Cat can go with Spidey on his adventures, rather than staying at home worrying.
